King Tupou VI has reigned since 2012. Under a 2010 constitutional reform, his powers were reduced to a largely ceremonial role as Tonga transitioned from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy. He was educated in Australia and has military training. He has supported Tonga's recovery from the devastating 2022 volcanic eruption and tsunami.

Other Leadership

King Tupou VI serves as the Head of State of Tonga. He ascended to the throne on March 18, 2012. Tonga is the only remaining monarchy in the Pacific Islands, and the king retains considerable political influence alongside the elected prime minister.

Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom of 169 islands in the South Pacific, the only monarchy in Oceania. It was never formally colonized by a European power. The kingdom has a strong cultural identity centered on royal traditions, Christian faith, and kava ceremonies. Tonga was devastated by the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption and tsunami in January 2022.

Tonga is a constitutional monarchy. King Tupou VI has been king since March 18, 2012. Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni has been PM since December 27, 2021. The Parliament (Fale Alea) has 26 seats: 17 elected (9 reserved for nobles; 17 for common people; following the 2010 democratic reforms which introduced popular election for most seats). Tonga transitioned toward democracy in 2010 (previously the king appointed most MPs); the king retains significant powers.

Tonga's economy is remittances (~35-40% of GDP), tourism (growing; Vava'u; Ha'apai), and subsistence agriculture. The 2022 Hunga Tonga volcanic eruption severely damaged infrastructure (5,000+ homes; government buildings; communication cable) and required approximately $200 million in reconstruction aid. Recovery is ongoing.

Major Industries

  • Remittances (~35-40% of GDP; largest Pacific SIDS remittance-to-GDP ratio; Tongan diaspora in New Zealand; Australia; USA)
  • Tourism (growing; beaches; whale watching; Vava'u; Ha'apai)
  • Agriculture (squash; vanilla; coconuts; root crops; subsistence)
  • Fishing (artisanal; EEZ fishing license fees)

Tonga is known for: Tonga is the world's highest per-capita recipient of remittances (relative to GDP): approximately 35-40% of GDP from Tongan diaspora in New Zealand; Australia; and the United States (approximately 80,000 Tongans live in the USA alone; more than Tonga's resident population of approximately 100,000). The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai submarine volcano eruption (January 15, 2022; the largest volcanic eruption globally since Pinatubo 1991) generated a global tsunami; cut Tonga's submarine internet cable; blanketed the islands in ash; and killed at least 6 people.

Trade Profile

Very large goods deficit offset by remittances (~35-40% of GDP), the world's highest per-capita rate.

Top Exports

  • Squash (~40%; Japan)
  • Fish (~20%)
  • Agricultural products (vanilla; coconuts)
  • Handicrafts (tapa)

  • Vehicles

Export Destinations

Tonga depends on the world for: Food; petroleum; consumer goods; remittances from diaspora (essential)

Global Role

Tonga's global significance is the 2022 Hunga Tonga volcanic eruption (world's largest in 30 years; global tsunami; internet cut), being the Pacific's only uncolonized monarchy, the world's highest per-capita remittances-to-GDP ratio, and Vava'u humpback whale sanctuary.

  • The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai submarine volcano eruption (January 15, 2022) was the largest volcanic eruption on Earth since Pinatubo (1991): the eruption column reached approximately 58 km (mesosphere; highest ever recorded); a global tsunami was generated (reaching Peru; Japan; Alaska; California; New Zealand); Tonga's submarine internet cable was cut (communications almost entirely lost for weeks); ash blanketed the islands; the eruption's atmospheric shockwave circled the Earth multiple times (detected on barometers worldwide)
  • Tonga is the Pacific's only island nation that was never formally colonized (it was a British Protectorate 1900-1970 but retained its monarchy and sovereignty); the Tongan monarchy has a continuous line from ancient Polynesian kings through George Tupou I (who unified Tonga and signed protective treaties with Britain) to present King Tupou VI
  • Tonga has the world's highest per-capita remittances relative to GDP (~35-40% of GDP) from its diaspora in New Zealand; Australia; and the USA (approximately 80,000 Tongans in USA alone; approaching the resident population of Tonga)
  • The Vava'u humpback whale sanctuary is one of the world's few places where swimming with humpback whales is legally permitted (limited; regulated; July-November breeding season)
